Theater Live: A Poem and A Mistake by Cheri Magid (play reading), with Sarah Baskin

  • Behind the Saugerties Public Library 91 Washington Ave Saugerties, NY 12477 (map)

A Poem and A Mistake follows the story of Myrrha, a grad student in the Classics who is grappling with how to make sense of the 50 violent rapes in Ovid's Metamorphoses. The questions that emerge for her begin to simultaneously unravel her own personal experiences of being a woman in the post metoo era. She finds herself in an unexpectedly heated debate about the rapes with her traditional, male professor, and her anger boils over so much that suddenly and inexplicably, the professor is transformed, metamorphosed, into a young woman who looks exactly like Myrrha. Both characters, Myrra and Not-Myrra, find themselves in an Ovid-like landscape where transformation is a magical and terrifying confrontation with their own gender, sexuality, and relationship to desire.
