ShoutOut Book Club - Absolution by Alice McDermott

Absolution by Alice McDermott -

With her ninth novel, National Book Award winner Alice McDermott attempts to understand the role that the wives of American soldiers played in the Vietnam War. The book begins in 1963 Saigon, with Tricia, a shy newlywed, whose lawyer husband is working for Navy intelligence as a “civilian advisor.” She soon finds herself forming an unlikely alliance with Charlene, a seasoned military wife and mother of three, who shows her how to support her husband without being subservient. Tricia struggles to find her own purpose until she and Charlene begin “helping” the people of Vietnam. It’s not until 60 years later, when Tricia is contacted by someone from her past, that she begins to question her own culpability in the conflict. Absolution is a moving story about the obligation, sacrifice, and regret that comes with living on the periphery of history. —Shannon Carlin, Time

ShoutOut Book Club -Deacon King Kong by James McBride

Deacon King Kong by James McBride -

In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and in front of everybody shoots the project’s drug dealer at point-blank range.

As the story deepens, it becomes clear that the lives of the characters–caught in the tumultuous swirl of 1960s New York–overlap in unexpected ways. When the truth does emerge, McBride shows us that not all secrets are meant to be hidden, that the best way to grow is to face change without fear, and that the seeds of love lie in hope and compassion.

ShoutOut’s Little Theater of Wonder is looking for plays.

Little Theater of Wonder produces theater for young audiences and open-hearted adults. We celebrate wonderment and the miraculous, created in an imaginative Poor Theater production style. We value wit and inventive theatricality.

Our inaugural production, “What’s Bugging Greg” by Darrah Cloud, toured six locations in the Saugerties/Woodstock/Kingston area Summer 2023. We are now planning a similar tour for our Summer 2024 season.

Do you have an idea for a play that will enchant audiences of kids and their grownups? Whose simple physical production will bring delight, and also fit in the back of a van? If you have an idea, pitch it to us!

“What’s Bugging Greg” was an adaptation of Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” - we are not daunted by challenging content.

We encourage music, movement, and zaniness. Adaptations are welcome. We want to tell stories that will make kids fall in love with theater, no matter how much or how little they’ve experienced. Also, let us know where you live and your relationship to the Hudson Valley.

What we seek:

Cast:  3-5 actors

Running Time:  40-60 minutes

Age Appropriate:  8 years and up

Sets & Design:  Simple sets (bare stage is ideal), hand props and costumes

What to Submit: A description (no more than one page) and a scene or two (max ten pages.)

Deadline: Weds., December 20

Link to Submit: Here

We look forward to hearing your ideas for making some Big Little Theater!

"This Business of Fighting: A Human Face on World War II" The WWII letters of Lt. Anton Pritchard, performed by his son Arnold Pritchard

Early in 1942 a young man from Rhode Island, Tony Pritchard, who had rarely been outside New England, went into the U.S. Army. By the time he returned home more than five years later, he had been all over the United States and Western Europe, had led troops in combat, had nearly died, had worked with refugees, and in general had encountered a world far wider and far more brutal than anything he had known. Years later his son Arnie inherited Tony's old army footlocker. It turned out to contain hundreds of letters, photos, and other documents from this time. These sources vividly portray the people, places, and events which he encountered. They also portray the hopes, fears, and passions which he and others struggled with as they played their parts in the largest conflict in human history.

Art = Healing: Meditation and Xanadu

3:00 PM: Laughter/crying meditation led by Linda Mary Montano

3:45 PM: “Wounded Crow,” performance, Will Nixon

“I bought a crow mask on a whim as a Christmas gift to myself, then for half-a-dozen years took selfies in this crow mask wherever I went, be it the summit of Mount Katahdin or a shower stall, back alley fire escapes or Chelsea art galleries. But why? Now that I’ve taken what may be my last crow self because the mask has fallen apart, I want to get to the roots of this obsession. Which has to do, I suspect, with the fact that photographs are a stay against death.” – Will Nixon

4:00 PM: “Xanadu” – performance Mikhail Horowitz with Celeste Graves and Gilles Malkine

"A recent diagnosis of Parkinson's disease initially threatened to put the kibosh on my performing career, which I have sustained for more than 50 years. But embracing my dear friend and occasional collaborator Linda Montano's belief in art as healing, I decided to revive my performance work, in a way that is scaled down. I chose to dramatize, with the assistance of dancer Celeste Graves and Gilles Malkine, Samuel Coleridge's "Xanadu", which was written under the influence of laudanum.”  – Mikhail Horowitz

Interactive screening of Montano’s latest film “What Could Go Wrong,” (edited by Tobe Carey and sound by Jim Barbaro) followed by conversation led by art history professor, Beth Wilson. Screening sponsored by Upstate Films.

About WHAT COULD  GO WRONG: “What Could Go Wrong” depicts fire trucks, ambulances, fire alarms with sonic distress that document every current disaster….floods, fires, war, food scarcity and police torture are  accompanied by Linda Mary Montano singing 7 ballads. The sappy positivity of the songs and the VISION of MARY bring a suggestion that hope is possible. This video is a study in contrasts and when the audience is invited to auditorily interact with it, the message is ACTION BREEDS HEALING and if so WHAT COULD GO RIGHT.
