Fall Festival: Tour of the Former Grounds and Studio of Bluestone Sculptor Tomas Penning
- 1372 Glasco Turnpike Saugerties, NY, 12477 United States (map)
Tour of the Former Grounds and Studio of Bluestone Sculptor Tomas Penning (1905-1982) lead by independent art historian Dr. Bruce Weber.
Tomas Penning was one of the leading sculptors of the historic Woodstock art colony. A mid-westerner by birth, he settled on the edge of Woodstock in the hamlet of High Woods in Saugerties in the early 1930s. Over the course of the next five decades he achieved recognition in the Hudson Valley as the “bluestone sculptor” because of his devotion to this native stone of Ulster County. He embraced bluestone as the medium for his carvings and was an outspoken advocate for its architectural merits. Dr. Bruce Weber, who is curating an exhibition opening next year of Penning’s work at the Woodstock School of Art, will lead this rare tour of Penning’s former grounds and studio in High Woods.
The tour is co-hosted with Opus 40. Tour is limited to 15 people.
